Invisible names in Fortnite, Among Us, Free Fire, Steam and PUBG
A blank name is a pasted Unicode character that the game accepts as text but draws as empty space. Which one works depends on each game's filter, and those filters change.
Short answer: paste the Hangul Filler (U+3164) from the invisible character tool into the name field. It is the character most often accepted by game name filters, because Unicode classes it as a letter rather than a space. If the game rejects it, try U+2800, or mix one blank with a visible character. Games change their rules often, and many charge or limit name changes, so test before you spend a rename card.
Why some blank names work and others are rejected
A name field usually runs three checks: it trims spaces from the ends, it checks the length, and it compares the result against a list of allowed characters. A normal space fails the first check. A zero-width space (U+200B) often fails the third, because many games specifically block zero-width characters to stop people impersonating others.
The Hangul Filler passes more often because it is a real letter in the Korean block of Unicode. Games that support Korean players have to allow Korean letters, and the filler comes along with them. Its cousins U+115F and U+1160 are similar. The Braille blank (U+2800) is a symbol, so it is accepted wherever symbols are.
Many games also have a minimum length, often between two and four characters. If a single blank is "too short", paste the same character several times. The generator on the tool page copies any number at once.
Game by game
The table below is a starting point, not a guarantee. Developers update their filters without announcing it, and what works on PC may be blocked on console or mobile. Name-change rules and prices also change, so check the game's own settings screen or help pages before you pay for anything.
| Game or platform | Try first | Fallback | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fortnite (Epic display name) | U+3164 | U+3164 with one visible character | The name is changed on the Epic Games account page, not in the game. Epic limits how often you can change it, so a failed attempt can lock you out for a while. |
| Among Us | U+3164 | U+2800 | Names are short, so a few blanks fit. Some versions and platforms filter unusual characters; if the name shows as a box or is replaced, it was filtered. |
| Free Fire | U+3164 | U+3164 plus visible characters | Renaming usually costs in-game currency or a name-change card. Test the characters in a free field, such as a guild message, first if you can. |
| PUBG Mobile | U+3164 | U+3164 plus visible characters | Renaming normally needs a rename card. Fully blank names are reported to be rejected more often than mixed ones. |
| Steam (profile name) | U+3164 | U+2800 | Your profile name can be edited freely in profile settings. Your account name (used to log in) cannot be changed and cannot be blank. |
| Discord | U+3164 | U+2800 | The unique username only allows lowercase letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. A display name or server nickname is the field to try a blank in. |
| Roblox | Unlikely to work | Usernames are limited to letters, numbers and one underscore, and display names are filtered, so blank names are generally rejected. | |
Step by step
- On the device where you will type the name, open the invisible character tool and tap Copy invisible character.
- Paste it into the clipboard tester on the same page. It should report one invisible character, U+3164.
- Open the game's name or profile screen, clear the old name, long-press the field and choose Paste.
- If the game says the name is too short, go back and use the generator to copy three to five U+3164 characters, then paste again.
- If the game says the name contains invalid characters, try U+2800, then a mix such as one visible letter followed by blanks.
- Before you confirm a paid rename, check whether the game shows a preview. If the preview shows boxes or question marks, the font does not support the character and other players may see the same.
On a console
Consoles have no easy clipboard between a browser and a game. For games that use a platform account (Epic, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox), change the name on the account website from a phone or computer instead, and it carries over to the console. Whether the console shows it as blank depends on its fonts.
Clever variations
- Half-blank names. A visible character surrounded by blanks, or blanks between two words, gets through filters that block fully blank names and still looks unusual.
- Centred names. Putting the same number of blanks before and after a short name makes it appear centred in some lobbies.
- Clan tags. Some games let you use blanks inside tags or team names even when the player name is stricter.
Before you do it
Blank names are popular, which is exactly why some developers block them. A name that is accepted today can be reset later by a filter update or a moderator, and you may not get a refund for the rename. A few points worth knowing:
- Read the rules. Some games' terms forbid names that cannot be read or reported. Using one could, in principle, lead to a forced rename. Check the game's code of conduct if you care about the account.
- Friends cannot search for you. Nobody can type an invisible character into a friend search, so add friends by code or invite link instead.
- Do not impersonate. Combining zero-width characters with someone else's name to make a lookalike account is against nearly every platform's rules.
- Keep a note of the original. Write down your old name in case you want it back; once released, someone else might take it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get banned for an invisible name?
A blank name by itself is rarely a ban reason, but it can break a game's rules on readable or reportable names, and the game may reset it. Check the game's code of conduct.
Why does my blank name show as boxes for some players?
Their device lacks a font that covers the character, so it draws a placeholder box. U+2800 tends to render as blank on more systems than U+3164.
Does a blank name count against the character limit?
Yes. Each blank is one character, so a 12-character limit allows up to 12 blanks. Some games count certain characters as two.
Can I make my Instagram or Discord username invisible?
No. Both limit usernames to letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. The display name and, on Discord, the server nickname are the fields that accept blank characters.
